U.S. Vice President Addresses Data Center Protests Amid Power Supply Concerns
U.S. Vice President JD Vance highlighted growing opposition to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers during the All-In Summit, attributing the backlash to inadequate power supply. Residents are increasingly frustrated as new data centers are constructed while their electricity bills continue to rise. Vance emphasized the need to enhance power generation capacity rather than limit the number of data centers being built.
Vance pointed out that the United States has not sufficiently expanded its power facilities over the past generation, which has hindered the growth of emerging industries like AI. He advocated for a future where electricity is so affordable that metering is unnecessary, referencing a historical slogan from the 1950s related to nuclear energy. This vision underscores the importance of addressing the energy demands posed by the tech industry.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that data centers will account for nearly half of the new electricity demand in the U.S. by 2025. In response to these challenges, U.S. Congress is currently advancing legislation aimed at preventing the financial burden of expanding data centers from falling on average households. This legislative effort reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance technological advancement with sustainable energy practices.
