Unstoppable Domains Drops ICANN Plans for .Crypto and…
Unstoppable Domains has abandoned plans to bring several of its largest blockchain-based domain extensions into the conventional internet Domain Name System, including .crypto and .wallet, after concluding that ICANN’s proposed integration requirements would conflict with its existing Web3 domain model. The company said August 25 that it will not proceed with ICANN applications for .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .bitcoin, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil and .blockchain.Instead, Unstoppable submitted applications for five other top-level domains during ICANN’s 2026 application round: .agi, .robot, .gram, .hub and .xmr. The decision represents a significant retreat from Unstoppable’s effort to bridge blockchain-native domains with the conventional DNS used by browsers and the wider internet.Unstoppable said the problem centers on how ICANN intends to handle namespaces that exist simultaneously on blockchain infrastructure and within the global DNS.
More Than 4 Million Existing Names Created the Conflict
Unstoppable’s Web3 domains differ fundamentally from conventional internet domains.Names such as .crypto and .wallet can be recorded on blockchain networks and used as human-readable identifiers for cryptocurrency addresses, decentralized websites and digital identities without functioning as ordinary ICANN-recognized DNS domains.Unstoppable had previously announced plans to apply for ICANN recognition for several of those extensions, potentially allowing the same namespaces to work across both systems. But the company said ICANN’s planned integration framework would require every name within an integrated namespace to also be registered in DNS and paid for.Registrants would additionally need to disclose information required for conventional domain registration. That creates a problem for Unstoppable’s existing base of more than 4 million Web3 names. Many customers purchased blockchain domains years before the company announced plans to seek ICANN recognition and intended to use them exclusively on-chain. Moving forward under the proposed framework could therefore require those users to enter the DNS system and incur recurring costs they never agreed to.“We aren’t willing to force that on our users, or bill them for it,” Unstoppable said in its announcement.ICANN has been examining the broader technical implications of connecting conventional generic top-level domains with alternative naming systems. It established a Technical Study Group this year that includes representatives from Unstoppable Domains, Ethereum Name Service, Identity Digital and other internet infrastructure organizations.Unstoppable Offers Refunds While Five Applications Continue
Customers who purchased affected extensions after Unstoppable publicly announced its intention to pursue ICANN recognition may now qualify for refunds. For .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .bitcoin, .dao, .unstoppable and .zil, purchases made on or after March 5, 2025 are eligible. For .blockchain, eligibility begins June 5, 2024 because Unstoppable announced its ICANN plans for that extension earlier. Refund requests opened August 25 and remain available through September 25. The company says eligible refunds will be processed within 28 days after verification.Unstoppable is nevertheless continuing with five ICANN applications. The company is pursuing .agi and .robot with the 0G ecosystem, while serving as registry service provider for Telegram’s proposed .gram extension. It is also proceeding with .hub alongside Hub Culture and .xmr.ICANN’s 2026 new-gTLD application window closed August 12 after receiving more than 1,600 primary applications. The final application list will become public after ICANN completes its administrative review.Unstoppable itself has successfully cleared ICANN’s Registry Service Provider evaluation, meaning the withdrawal of the nine Web3 extensions is not the result of the company failing to qualify as registry infrastructure. Instead, it reflects a more fundamental dispute over how blockchain domains should coexist with DNS.The episode highlights an unresolved challenge facing Web3 naming systems. Blockchain domains can offer permanent ownership and permissionless registration, while the conventional DNS relies on centralized registries, standardized registration processes and recurring operational requirements. Unstoppable had hoped to make individual extensions function across both environments. For .crypto and .wallet, at least, that bridge will not be built during ICANN’s 2026 round. Rather than retroactively changing the terms for millions of existing holders, Unstoppable has chosen to keep those namespaces blockchain-native while pursuing conventional DNS integration only for newer extensions better suited to ICANN’s requirements.Source: FinanceFeeds
