Zuckerberg Critiques Proposal for National AI Regulatory Agency During Call with Trump

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently voiced his concerns regarding the establishment of a national AI regulatory agency during a phone call with former President Donald Trump. The proposal, which is supported by some White House officials and advocated by Google DeepMind scientist Demis Hassabis, aims to create an independent body similar to FINRA to assess potential risks associated with advanced AI models before their widespread deployment.

During the conversation in mid-August, Zuckerberg expressed his opposition to the regulatory agency concept but did not request a change in Trump's stance. He suggested that the personnel appointed to the agency should align with Trump's light-touch approach to AI. Despite Zuckerberg's reservations, the proposal remains under consideration by the administration.

Zuckerberg has previously articulated skepticism about stringent government regulations on AI, warning that delays in releasing new models could jeopardize the United States' competitive edge against China. The Trump administration is exploring options for AI oversight, including a FINRA-like agency or a voluntary industry organization akin to the Motion Picture Association of America. Opinions on the matter vary, with some, like Trump's former AI czar David Sachs, opposing regulatory agencies altogether.
