Active Managers Experience $16 Billion Inflows Following Mutual Fund to ETF Conversions

A significant shift from mutual funds to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has resulted in over $16 billion in inflows for active managers, marking a notable turnaround in the asset management landscape. Since 2021, more than 200 mutual funds have converted to ETFs, collectively managing over $260 billion in assets. This trend has reversed the chronic outflows that active managers faced, with converted funds now averaging inflows of approximately $500 million over two years after the switch.

The data reveals that around 71% of post-conversion ETFs have reported positive net flows, attracting about $120 billion in total inflows against only $20 billion in outflows. The median inflow per converted fund stands at $125 million, with only 29% of these funds continuing to experience outflows. Notably, firms such as Dimensional Fund Advisors and JPMorgan Asset Management have seen substantial benefits from this trend, with 12 out of 16 firms that converted four or more funds reporting significant aggregate inflows.

The advantages of ETFs over mutual funds include tax efficiency, as ETFs typically avoid distributing capital gains to shareholders, and the ability for investors to trade throughout the day, unlike mutual funds which price once daily. Additionally, the recent approval of semi-transparent ETF structures by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has alleviated concerns among active managers regarding the transparency of their holdings.

Active ETFs now account for approximately 12% of the $15 trillion U.S. ETF market, a significant increase from just 4% in 2021. While the influx of capital into converted ETFs presents opportunities, it also poses risks, particularly for strategies constrained by capacity in less liquid markets. As the market becomes increasingly saturated with new active ETF launches, distinguishing oneself will require more than merely changing fund structures.
