AI Infrastructure Investment Competes with U.S. Treasuries, Influencing Long-Term Yields

As of August 21, the growing demand for AI infrastructure investment is reshaping the U.S. bond market. Major technology companies are expanding their data centers and investing in chip and computing power, leading to increased competition for long-term funds traditionally allocated to U.S. government securities. This shift is particularly evident among core buyers such as insurance companies and pension funds, who are now considering AI-related financing options alongside U.S. Treasuries.

The issuance of U.S. investment-grade corporate bonds has reached approximately $1.7 trillion this year, marking a historical high for this period. Notably, the four largest U.S. tech firms have collectively issued over $170 billion in bonds in 2023, exceeding the total for the entire year of 2025. Companies like Broadcom are actively seeking to finance AI infrastructure projects, with potential debt offerings nearing $100 billion, further intensifying the competition for capital.

This surge in demand for long-term financing from both the government and tech companies is contributing to an overall increase in duration supply in the bond market. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard highlighted the emerging competition between the financing needs of the U.S. government and the requirements of AI infrastructure development. As a result, the yield on 30-year U.S. Treasuries has climbed to 5.34%, the highest level since 2007, while the 10-year yield has reached 4.7%.

The rising interest rates may lead to higher corporate financing costs, potentially impacting the valuations of AI companies. Concurrently, there are indications of weakening consumer data, exemplified by Walmart's stock experiencing a significant drop of about 9%, the largest decline since 2022. With economic growth slowing and inflation pressures remaining, the Federal Reserve faces challenges in its policy decisions, prompting the U.S. Treasury to increase the single repurchase limit for long-term Treasuries. If long-end yields continue to rise, the market may explore measures such as yield curve control or quantitative easing.
