Samsung's Taylor Semiconductor Plant Set for Trial Operations Amid High Demand for 2-Nanometer Chips
Samsung Electronics is preparing to initiate trial operations at its semiconductor fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas, by the end of September 2026. The facility has already secured significant orders for 2-nanometer chips from major companies including Tesla, Broadcom, and Arm, with pre-production capacity nearing full utilization. The plant represents a substantial investment of $37 billion since 2022 and is expected to ramp up to mass production next year, targeting an initial monthly output of approximately 50,000 wafers, which is close to the capacity of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
The Taylor plant will focus on producing advanced chips, including Tesla's AI5 chip, Broadcom's next-generation communication chips, and Arm's AI chips for smart devices. Samsung's yield for its 2-nanometer process has improved significantly, rising from about 60% earlier this year to around 80%. This improvement follows the deployment of personnel to the plant in June and the installation of equipment starting in July.
In addition to the Taylor facility, Samsung plans to begin construction on a second plant by the end of 2026, with mass production anticipated by 2030. The company is urging its partners to expedite safety certifications for production equipment, with some partners considering sending personnel to assist locally. Meanwhile, Intel has announced a $20 billion share issuance to bolster its investments in advanced semiconductor technologies, and Japan's Rapidus has completed its own 2-nanometer factory in Hokkaido, entering the trial production phase.
