ByteDance Secures $29.6 Billion Loan to Boost AI Development

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has finalized a loan agreement worth $29.6 billion with a consortium of 28 banks, including HSBC and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. This loan, which has a three-year term that can be extended to five years, carries an interest rate of 0.68 percentage points above the benchmark rate. This transaction marks the second-largest loan in Asia for the year, following a $40 billion loan arranged by SoftBank in March.

The funds from this loan will be allocated for general corporate purposes, primarily aimed at advancing ByteDance's artificial intelligence initiatives. The company had previously secured $10.8 billion from around 20 lenders in 2024, and initially sought $20 billion for this latest agreement. As of February 2026, ByteDance was valued at approximately $550 billion, and reports indicate that the company is contemplating an investment of up to $70 billion in data centers and AI infrastructure by 2026.

The announcement of the loan coincides with growing concerns in the tech industry regarding the rapid pace of AI development. Notable figures such as Elon Musk, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have called for a slowdown in the AI race, citing safety issues. Additionally, a report from Bitcoin Suisse forecasts that major hyperscale computing firms in the United States will collectively spend over $800 billion this year, with projections exceeding $1 trillion by 2027.
