Morgan Stanley Highlights Strategic Value in Coinbase's Expanded Offerings
Morgan Stanley has identified significant strategic value in Coinbase Global's recent pivot towards becoming an 'Everything Exchange.' This shift aims to extend beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading, allowing the company to engage in equities, commodities, prediction markets, pre-IPO exposure, and tokenized assets. The firm noted that Coinbase's custody services, financing options, and partnerships with stablecoin providers position it favorably within the financial infrastructure landscape as the lines between cryptocurrency and traditional finance continue to blur.
Despite this optimistic outlook, Morgan Stanley anticipates a challenging near-term financial performance for Coinbase. The firm projects a decline in total revenue by 18% to $5.9 billion and a 28% drop in adjusted EBITDA to $1.8 billion for the year 2026, resulting in a 31% margin. However, they forecast a substantial recovery in 2027, predicting a 50% revenue increase to $8.9 billion and more than doubling of adjusted EBITDA to $3.7 billion, with margins expanding to 42% as revenue growth significantly outstrips operating expenses.
Morgan Stanley has initiated coverage of Coinbase with an equal-weight rating and set a price target of $250 for the company's shares. This assessment reflects the potential for Coinbase to leverage its expanded offerings in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
