Institutional Investors Reduce Dollar Hedges, Boosting Crypto Prices

Global institutional investors have significantly reduced their dollar hedging strategies, leading to notable increases in the prices of major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. As of late June, hedge ratios for dollar exposure among major non-U.S. institutional holders fell to 41%, the lowest level recorded since 2015. This trend reflects a broader shift among pension funds and institutional investors from countries including Japan and Denmark, who are shedding currency protection at an unprecedented pace.

In the first half of 2026, Japanese investors hedged only 41% of new foreign bond purchases, a sharp decline from 62% in 2024. Similarly, Danish pension funds reversed about half of their hedging increases from mid-2025. Canadian institutions also reported a slight decrease in their hedge ratios, while similar patterns emerged in Taiwan and the Netherlands. The reduction in hedge ratios has been accompanied by a drop in dollar hedge costs, with three-month costs for yen-based investors reaching a four-year low of 2.75%.

The decrease in dollar hedging means that institutional portfolios are now more sensitive to currency movements, which can lead to higher returns on foreign assets when the dollar weakens. This dynamic has historically resulted in increased risk sentiment and greater liquidity in the market. As hedge ratios remain at decade lows, the potential for dramatic valuation swings in response to dollar fluctuations has heightened, raising concerns about the vulnerability of global portfolios to dollar volatility.
