Ngrave Launches ZERO Firmware 1.8 with Enhanced Token Support and Open-Source QR Protocol
Ngrave has released firmware version 1.8 for its ZERO hardware wallet, introducing significant updates including an open-source Universal QR Protocol and expanded token support on the Polygon network. The update went live on August 25 and also applies to the companion LIQUID app.
The new Universal QR Protocol replaces the previous communication method, allowing data exchange between the ZERO wallet and the LIQUID app to flow through a standardized QR protocol that is open for inspection. This change aims to enhance transparency and security, as the protocol is released under the MIT license, enabling other developers and researchers to audit and modify the code freely.
In addition to the QR protocol, the firmware update expands token support on Polygon, now including USDC, USDT (specifically USDT0), WETH, WBTC, DAI, AAVE, LINK, and UNI. Previously, the ZERO wallet only supported MATIC as a standalone coin on the network. The update also adds support for PAXG and AMP on Ethereum, and USDT on MultiversX, while removing over 100 inactive tokens and dropping support for BNB Beacon Chain and Groestlcoin.
The firmware update also improves the reliability of the fingerprint sensor used for biometric authentication, reducing failed unlock attempts. Ngrave aims to differentiate itself in the competitive hardware wallet market by emphasizing transparency, especially following criticisms faced by other companies in the sector. Users can verify the integrity of the firmware through published manifest signatures and SHA-256 hashes before installation.
