Standard Chartered Becomes First Bank Distributor of Hong…
Why Does Bank Distribution Matter For HKDAP?
Standard Chartered has become the first bank authorised to distribute HKDAP, giving Hong Kong's first regulated local-currency stablecoin a direct route into institutional banking, corporate treasury and cross-border payment operations.Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) plans to work initially with eligible institutional clients and partners, integrating HKDAP into existing financial operations. Planned applications include settlement for tokenised money market funds, transfers between entities within the bank's global network and cross-border payments. The bank is not HKDAP's first distributor. OSL and HashKey Exchange were among the authorised distributors when issuer Anchorpoint Financial began Beta Access on Aug. 12. Standard Chartered's addition is different because it extends distribution from regulated digital-asset platforms into conventional banking infrastructure. The relationship also puts Standard Chartered across several layers of the token's operation. Anchorpoint is a subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) and a joint venture involving Hong Kong Telecom and Animoca Brands, while Standard Chartered Trustee holds the reserve assets backing HKDAP in trust.Anchorpoint says every HKDAP is fully backed by high-quality, highly liquid assets held separately from the issuer's operating assets and can be redeemed one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars. Why Are Tokenised Funds The First Major Test?
Standard Chartered's rollout is focused on institutional settlement rather than consumer payments. The bank plans to introduce a tokenised money market fund subscription and settlement service with international and local asset managers in the fourth quarter. That use case addresses one of the practical problems facing tokenised securities. A fund unit can move on-chain while its cash payment still travels through conventional banking systems, leaving part of the settlement and reconciliation process outside the blockchain infrastructure.HKDAP could provide the digital cash leg of those transactions. The same logic applies to intragroup treasury transfers, where Standard Chartered plans to test HKDAP between entities within its own network before wider corporate adoption. The bank already has experience with tokenised assets and deposits in Hong Kong, including work under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's Project Ensemble. Adding a public-blockchain stablecoin gives it another settlement model alongside tokenised commercial bank money.Investor Takeaway
The important test for HKDAP is not whether Standard Chartered can distribute it, but whether asset managers and corporate clients create recurring demand. Bank integration gives the token access to institutional users that crypto-only distribution channels may struggle to reach.
How Large Is HKDAP Today?
HKDAP remains small. Anchorpoint's latest transparency data, dated Aug. 19, showed 522,000 tokens in circulation and transaction volume of 658,160 during Beta Access.Access is still restricted to selected authorised distributors and institutional or corporate users, and the token currently operates only on Ethereum mainnet. Anchorpoint has said wider availability, potentially including retail access, could begin as early as the end of 2026 if its issuance, distribution and custody systems are ready.Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance took effect on Aug. 1, 2025, requiring issuers of covered fiat-referenced stablecoins to obtain a licence. The HKMA granted its first two licences in April 2026 to Anchorpoint and HSBC. Anchorpoint received licence FRS01 and began circulating HKDAP four months later.HSBC has yet to launch its competing Hong Kong dollar stablecoin but plans to do so in the second half of 2026. Its proposed integration with HSBC's mobile banking app and PayMe could give it a much larger retail distribution channel, while its planned applications include payments and tokenised investment subscriptions. Can Institutional Demand Give HKDAP An Advantage?
The competition between HKDAP and HSBC's planned token may provide an early test of two different stablecoin models. Anchorpoint is relying on authorised distributors, with Standard Chartered connecting the token to corporate banking and institutional markets. HSBC plans deeper integration with its own banking and consumer payment products. For HKDAP, competing directly with dollar-backed USDT or USDC for global crypto trading liquidity may be less important than finding transactions already denominated in Hong Kong dollars. Tokenised funds, corporate treasury operations and cross-border payments offer clearer reasons for institutions to hold and use the token.Standard Chartered's involvement could help because the bank can connect clients, reserve infrastructure, distribution and potential settlement uses within the same group. That reduces some of the operational friction involved in moving between traditional bank accounts and blockchain-based money. It also makes adoption outside Standard Chartered's own network an important metric. If HKDAP activity remains concentrated among its issuer, shareholders and launch partners, distribution alone will not establish a broad market. The current circulation figure shows that HKDAP is still closer to an institutional pilot than a mature payment rail. The more useful numbers over the coming months will be external transaction volumes, asset-manager participation and recurring corporate use. Those figures will show whether Hong Kong's regulated stablecoin model can turn bank-backed infrastructure into durable demand for local-currency digital money.Source: FinanceFeeds
