Corporate Political Spending Reaches Record High Ahead of 2026 Midterm Elections

American companies have set a new record for political spending in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections, investing $517 million in congressional races for the House and Senate over a 15-month period ending in the first quarter of 2026. This figure surpasses the previous high of $461 million recorded during the 2024 election cycle.

The cryptocurrency, technology, and online betting sectors have emerged as significant contributors, collectively providing at least $294 million. Notable contributions include $193 million from the Fairshake super PAC, which is primarily funded by cryptocurrency firms such as Coinbase and Ripple, and $81 million from a16z to various cryptocurrency and AI-related political action committees. Elon Musk has also made a substantial investment of over $90 million, while Meta has contributed $65 million to four super PACs.

In addition to these contributions, the AI-focused organization Leading the Future has raised $140 million, and Anthropic has donated at least $40 million through non-profit organizations. Online betting companies, including DraftKings and FanDuel, have collectively donated more than $72 million. AdImpact projects that total political ad spending for the midterm elections could reach a record $11.6 billion, with critics expressing concerns about the influence of niche issues such as cryptocurrency regulation and betting regulation due to the significant financial power of these industries.
