Crypto Stocks Decline as Treasury Yields Rise

On Tuesday, stocks associated with cryptocurrencies experienced significant declines while Bitcoin and Ethereum remained relatively stable. Circle Internet Group's stock fell by 4% to $91.80, reversing part of a previous day's 10% gain. Bitmine Immersion Technologies also saw a 4% drop to $24.38, following a 6% increase the day before. Coinbase Global's shares decreased by 3% to $182.20, unwinding a 5% advance from Monday.

The downturn in crypto equities is attributed to a rise in the 10-year Treasury yield, which reached 4.79%, surpassing its previous 52-week high. This increase in long-term yields tends to negatively impact high-multiple stocks, such as those in the cryptocurrency sector. In contrast, passive investment vehicles like the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF and the Invesco QQQ Trust experienced smaller declines of around 1%.

Despite the declines, the broader market does not indicate widespread fear, as evidenced by the CBOE Volatility Index, which remains at a moderate level. The lack of company-specific news for Circle Internet, Bitmine, and Coinbase suggests that the stock movements are more reflective of market positioning rather than fundamental issues. Investors are closely monitoring the bond market for further signals that could impact these high-beta stocks.
