Ethereum's Glamsterdam Upgrade Set for Public Test on October 6, 2026

Ethereum's upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade has successfully completed its latest private development rehearsal, paving the way for a public testnet deployment on the Sepolia network scheduled for October 6, 2026, at 13:53 UTC. This upgrade aims to significantly enhance the network's capacity by nearly tripling the block gas limit from approximately 60 million to 200 million, while also reducing transaction fees by an estimated 78.6%.

The Glamsterdam upgrade incorporates two major improvements: proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs). ePBS, introduced through Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 7732, aims to reduce reliance on external services that can introduce centralization risks. BALs, delivered via EIP 7928, allow transactions to specify which parts of Ethereum's state they will interact with, enabling safer parallel execution and increasing the network's processing capabilities.

The October testnet date is contingent on the stability of the private testing environment, known as Devnet-11. Previous testing phases have revealed bugs and issues that have led to timeline adjustments to ensure stability before a wider release. If the testnet proceeds without complications, the focus will shift to a mainnet activation, tentatively targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. This upgrade is part of Ethereum's broader strategy, known as the Surge, aimed at enhancing scalability across both Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks.
