SEC Approves Temporary Framework for Tokenized Stock Trading

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved a temporary and conditional Innovation Exemption that will enable specific Tokenized Securities Venues to facilitate limited trading of tokenized National Market System (NMS) stocks on blockchain technology. This decision was announced on September 17 by SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda.

The SEC's initiative aims to modernize the infrastructure of securities markets, which includes processes for issuance, trading, settlement, and ownership records. The move is expected to enhance transparency and liquidity in the market while potentially lowering trading costs.

This development marks a significant step towards integrating blockchain technology into traditional financial markets, which could lead to a more efficient trading environment. The implications of this framework are still unfolding as the SEC continues to explore the potential of tokenization in the financial sector.
