Hyundai Card Sets Its Sights on a Stablecoin Breakthrough
Hyundai Card has completed a $20,000 cross-border intercompany payment using Tether's USDT on the Avalanche blockchain, settling the transaction between Hyundai Motor's US and Mexico units in roughly seven minutes. The South Korean credit card unit of Hyundai Motor Group is now preparing to scale the infrastructure before committing to a full commercial rollout. The pilot, first announced in July 2026, routed fiat currency from Hyundai Motor America through a conversion to USDT, transferred the tokens via Avalanche's network, and converted them back into US dollars on arrival at Hyundai Motor Mexico.Traditional interbank wires between the two entities typically take three to four hours, according to the company's internal benchmarks, making the seven-minute settlement a significant reduction for a routine treasury operation.
Why Hyundai is Building Around Stablecoins
Axiym, a liquidity and settlement infrastructure provider, supported the conversions for the pilot. Ava Labs, the development team behind Avalanche, provided the blockchain layer. The structure bypasses correspondent banking networks entirely, removing the intermediary fees and delays that inflate costs on high-frequency intercompany transfers across jurisdictions. The test comes as corporate stablecoin adoption accelerates globally. Visa's own stablecoin settlement volume has reached a $20 billion annualized run rate, a 15-fold increase from a year earlier, signaling that large financial institutions increasingly view stablecoin rails as operationally viable rather than experimental. CoinDesk described Hyundai as the first major South Korean company to use Avalanche for live cross-border treasury transfers.Scale is the Next Hurdle
Hyundai Card is not yet committing to a production timeline. Heejung Nam, head of payments and business development at the company, framed the current phase as a proof-of-concept that must survive volume stress before it earns a wider mandate."We have to prove the entire operation model works at scale. What happens if we can scale up? Then the economic model works," Nam told crypto.news.That caution matters because a $20,000 transfer between two subsidiaries of the same parent is far simpler than the multi-currency, multi-jurisdictional flows a production treasury system would need to handle. Compliance screening, real-time foreign exchange conversion, and regulatory approval in each country all add friction that a controlled pilot can sidestep.European Expansion With Circle and Visa
The next phase will move beyond dollar-denominated transfers. Hyundai Card plans to run a European pilot using non-USD currencies in partnership with Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, and Visa. That leg of the project will test whether the same model can handle local-currency conversion costs that currently eat into margins on intra-group payments across the European Union.Justin Kim, Ava Labs' head of Asia-Pacific operations, pushed back against framing the initiative as a sandbox exercise. "This is already a real treasury management use case, not a sandbox," Kim told CoinDesk in July. Whether Hyundai's board agrees will depend on whether the European test delivers the same speed gains without triggering new regulatory friction under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) framework.Source: FinanceFeeds
