Israeli Crime Groups Increasingly Use Cryptocurrency for Money Laundering

Israeli organized crime groups are increasingly utilizing cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Tether for money laundering activities, as revealed by recent law enforcement actions. In April 2026, seven defendants, including members of classified Israeli Defense Forces and police units, were indicted on charges of bribery, theft, and money laundering, with alleged proceeds exceeding 50 million NIS (approximately $13 million) laundered through digital currencies.

The trend reflects a broader shift within criminal networks in Israel, which are leveraging the anonymity and efficiency of cryptocurrencies to obscure financial transactions. Tether, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, has gained particular traction due to its price stability, making it suitable for large transactions. A notable case in 2025 involved a robbery in Herzliya, where assailants stole $650,000 worth of Bitcoin and Tether and subsequently laundered the funds through various exchanges.

In response to the growing use of cryptocurrencies in organized crime, Israeli authorities have initiated countermeasures, including a 9 million shekel contract with blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis to enhance their tracing capabilities. Tether has also cooperated with law enforcement, freezing over 10 million USDT linked to a fraud investigation at their request. However, the international nature of cryptocurrency transactions complicates enforcement efforts, as funds can traverse multiple jurisdictions, making recovery challenging.
