Liquid Network Recovers 3,400 Bitcoin Following Vulnerability Exploit

On September 6, 2026, a vulnerability in the Elements software used by Liquid Network allowed approximately 4,000 Bitcoin (BTC) to be drained from its federation wallet. This incident, which initially appeared to be a standard transaction, resulted in a loss valued at around $320 million. By September 7, 3,400 BTC had been returned to the federation, while negotiations continue over the remaining 598.5 BTC, worth roughly $47 million.

The flaw in the Elements software enabled the unauthorized generation of unbacked L-BTC tokens, creating claims on Bitcoin without real collateral. Notably, the federation's private keys were not compromised, and the infrastructure of SideSwap, which facilitated the withdrawal, showed no signs of breach. The actors behind the exploit identified themselves as white-hat hackers, communicating their intentions through Bitcoin's OP_RETURN field.

In response to the incident, Blockstream, the company behind Liquid Network, confirmed that it had patched the affected bridge nodes. However, operations on the Liquid Network remain suspended, with exchanges supporting L-BTC instructed to halt all deposits and withdrawals. This pause leaves users of the sidechain asset in uncertainty regarding the timeline for resuming normal operations.

The incident has raised questions about the nature of the recovery, as returning 85% of the stolen funds while retaining a significant amount for further discussions blurs the lines between a bounty and extortion. The Liquid Network's federated sidechain architecture, which relies on a consortium of functionaries for security, was highlighted as a factor that contributed to the exploit's success, despite the integrity of the cryptographic keys.
