Micron Technology Invests $50 Billion in Boise Expansion to Boost Semiconductor Production

Micron Technology is investing $50 billion to construct two large fabrication plants in Boise, Idaho, aimed at producing advanced DRAM memory chips. Each facility will feature approximately 600,000 square feet of cleanroom space, and the overall development is being described as a self-sustaining "little city" rather than a traditional factory complex. This ambitious project is supported by funding from the federal CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to enhance domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

The expansion is expected to create over 17,000 jobs in Idaho, including direct employment and additional opportunities through the local economy. Micron is also committing $75 million over the next decade to support STEM education and workforce training programs, partnering with the College of Western Idaho to develop a skilled workforce capable of operating the new facilities.

Construction on the first fabrication plant is reportedly ahead of schedule, with equipment expected to arrive by late 2026 and initial DRAM wafer production anticipated by mid-2027. Work on the second plant is already in progress, with a target completion date set for late 2028. Micron aims to produce 40% of its DRAM output in the United States by 2035, responding to the growing demand driven by advancements in artificial intelligence.
