Spot Bitcoin ETFs Experience $462 Million in Net Outflows Amid Fed Rate Hike Expectations

Between September 8 and 11, 2026, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) faced significant net outflows totaling approximately $462.7 million. This decline follows a week that had previously seen inflows of nearly $987 million, including a notable single-day influx of about $730.9 million on September 3. The recent outflows are particularly striking given the sharp reversal in investor sentiment as expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike surged to 87%.

September 10 marked the peak of the outflows, with $282.6 million exiting spot Bitcoin ETFs in just one day. The ARK 21Shares’ ARKB ETF was the most affected, accounting for around $164.3 million of that amount. Other notable products experiencing significant redemptions included Grayscale’s GBTC, BlackRock’s IBIT, and Fidelity’s FBTC. During this period, Bitcoin's price also dipped from approximately $77,362 to about $76,816.

The anticipation of a rate hike at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 16 has led institutional investors to withdraw from riskier assets. Higher interest rates typically strengthen the U.S. dollar and increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. As Treasury yields rise alongside these expectations, risk assets are under additional pressure. Despite the recent outflows, the overall picture for Bitcoin ETFs remains robust, with cumulative net inflows since their launch in January 2024 exceeding $55 billion. Total assets under management in this category are estimated to be between $97 billion and $148 billion, indicating that the recent outflows represent less than 1% of total assets even at conservative estimates.
