Osmosis Suspends Operations Following Nomic Chain Exploit

Osmosis, a decentralized exchange operating within the Cosmos ecosystem, has halted key operations related to its synthetic Bitcoin asset, allBTC, on September 9. This decision follows a security breach on the Nomic blockchain, which allowed an attacker to exploit a double-spend vulnerability, compromising nearly 40 nBTC, equivalent to approximately 36% of the backing for allBTC.

In response to the incident, Osmosis froze all minting, redemption, deposits, and withdrawals associated with allBTC to mitigate further damage. An emergency upgrade successfully locked 22.65 BTC in the attacker's address, preventing the movement of these funds. Although trading of BTC in existing liquidity pools continues, users are unable to create new allBTC or cash out their holdings until the situation is resolved.

Osmosis has outlined a recovery plan that includes a governance vote to seize the frozen BTC and a proposal to utilize the community pool to cover the shortfall. This approach aims to restore the 1:1 backing of alloyed BTC, ensuring that all synthetic Bitcoin tokens on the platform are fully collateralized. A detailed incident report and recovery timeline are expected in the coming days.
