Point72 to Expand Workforce and Investment in Japan

Point72 Asset Management has announced plans to double its workforce and capital allocation in Japan, reflecting a growing confidence in the country's evolving market. The hedge fund, led by Steve Cohen and managing approximately $58.5 billion in assets, aims to enhance its presence in Tokyo as Japan's corporate governance reforms attract increased foreign investment.

Currently, Point72 employs around 54 individuals in Japan, which constitutes about 1.3% of its global workforce of roughly 4,100. The planned expansion would increase this number to over 100, establishing Tokyo as a significant hub for the firm outside the United States. In early 2025, Point72 relocated its Tokyo office to Otemachi One Tower, nearly doubling its physical space.

The firm has been actively hiring to support this growth, including the recent appointment of Shinji Ogawa from JPMorgan as Head of Japan, effective November 2025. This move follows a previous commitment in 2017 to expand its Tokyo staff from 30 to over 60, a target that has been largely achieved.

Japan's ongoing corporate governance reforms, which have led to increased share buybacks and dividend distributions, have created new investment opportunities. Cohen has indicated a desire for continued growth in Japan, with plans for a 20% increase in headcount, further emphasizing the firm's commitment to the region.
