Retail Investor Demand Reaches Highest Level Since December 2024

Retail investor demand has surged by 16% over the past 30 days, marking its highest level since December 2024. This increase reflects a broader trend that has seen individual investors become a significant force in the U.S. equity markets, with participation rates and inflows surpassing those observed during the 2021 meme-stock era.

Data indicates that retail flows into U.S. stocks in 2025 are more than 50% higher than in 2024, with current figures approximately 14-17% above the previous peak seen during the meme-stock frenzy. Citadel Securities reports that average daily dollar demand on its retail platform in early 2026 was about 25% higher than the previous high from 2021, and by July 2026, daily net buying reached 3.2 times the historical monthly average.

Retail investors now account for an estimated 20-25% of total U.S. equity trading volume, peaking at nearly 35% in April 2025. This is a significant increase from the low single-digit percentages seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent Schwab survey revealed that 47% of retail clients held bullish views on U.S. stocks in Q3 2026, nearly doubling the 28% recorded in Q2, with trading volumes on the Schwab platform rising 57% year-over-year during the same period.

A notable shift in investment strategy has been observed, with retail investors increasingly favoring Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) over individual stocks. This trend is particularly evident among younger investors, indicating a generational change in market engagement. Research from JPMorgan and Vanda Research highlights retail investors as key marginal buyers in the current market landscape.
