Sberbank Anticipates $46 Billion in Russia's First Year of Regulated Crypto Trading

Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, forecasts that the country's regulated cryptocurrency trading volume will reach approximately $46 billion in its inaugural year. Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov stated that this figure represents about 20% of Russia's total annual crypto activity, which is estimated to be around 18 trillion rubles, or roughly $230 billion.

The new regulations, set to take effect on September 1, 2026, will allow Russians to legally buy and trade cryptocurrencies only through licensed brokers, exchanges, asset managers, and depositories. Initially, only Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT will be available for trading, with non-qualified investors facing an annual purchase cap of 300,000 rubles, approximately $3,800. Qualified investors will have a higher limit of 3 million rubles.

Despite the introduction of regulated trading, the majority of crypto transactions, approximately 80%, are expected to continue through peer-to-peer channels and offshore platforms. Sberbank is preparing to enter this market by launching a digital depository and wallet service by December 2026, and is also considering crypto-backed lending options for borrowers using cryptocurrencies as collateral. The bank's projections suggest that regulated trading volume could increase to 7.5 trillion rubles, or about $87 billion, by 2029.
