SpaceX Unlocks Additional Shares for Trading as Lockup Schedule Continues

SpaceX has announced the unlocking of approximately 319 million shares for trading on August 20, 2026. This marks the second phase in a staggered post-IPO lockup schedule, which is designed to prevent a sudden influx of shares into the market. By the end of 2026, nearly 5 billion shares are expected to be released in total.

The first tranche of shares, totaling 911.5 million, was unlocked on August 6, 2026, and the stock price actually increased by about 6% on that day, indicating strong investor confidence. The IPO, which took place in June 2026, raised approximately $85.7 billion by selling around 639 million Class A shares at $135 each, and the company is now trading under the ticker SPCX on Nasdaq.

The upcoming release of 319 million shares is smaller than the initial tranche, suggesting that the market should be able to absorb this new supply without significant disruption. Notably, Elon Musk's shares remain locked until June 2027, which alleviates concerns about a major sell-off from the largest shareholder. Analysts believe the staggered release strategy is effective in maintaining investor confidence by allowing the market to adjust gradually to the increased share availability.
