University of California Invests $2.5 Billion in New ETF, Setting Record

UC Investments, the investment arm of the University of California, has made a significant move in the exchange-traded fund (ETF) market by seeding $2.5 billion into the newly launched State Street SPDR UC Investments 90/10 Endowment Strategy Index ETF (UCBG). This investment marks the largest opening-day check in ETF history, establishing UCBG as the most well-capitalized ETF at its inception.

Launched on September 2-3, 2026, the UCBG fund is designed to replicate the University of California's Blue and Gold Endowment Pool, allocating 90% of its assets to the S&P 500 and 10% to short-duration, investment-grade corporate bonds. State Street Investment Management manages the fund, which has quickly gained attention for its substantial initial capital.

In a related development, ProShares introduced the GENIUS Money Market ETF (IQMM) on February 17, 2026, which has also seen remarkable success. Designed to comply with the GENIUS Act of 2025, IQMM achieved approximately $17 billion in first-day trading volume and has since grown to an estimated total volume of $20-22 billion. This ETF focuses exclusively on short-term U.S. Treasury securities, adhering to the reserve requirements set forth by the new legislation. The surge in ETF sizes reflects a broader trend in the market, with average day-one asset sizes doubling over the past five years, indicating a shift towards larger, more liquid funds.
