Hackers Exploit Italian Government Email to Target Revolut Customers

Hackers have breached an email account belonging to Italy's Ministry of Interior, using it to impersonate law enforcement and deceive Revolut into disclosing sensitive data from approximately 700 customers. The attackers demanded a ransom of 10,000 Bitcoin following the breach, which occurred around September 11-12, 2026.

The compromised email account, associated with the @interno.it domain, allowed the hackers to send fraudulent emergency data requests to Revolut, a London-based fintech company. These requests, typically used by law enforcement to obtain user information without a court order, were processed by Revolut before the fraud was detected. The exposed data included identity documents, passports, verification selfies, and Bitcoin transaction histories.

In response to the incident, Revolut confirmed that its internal systems remained secure and that customer funds were not compromised. The company acted swiftly to block the hacked email account, notify relevant authorities, and inform the affected users directly. Investigations are currently underway by Italy's Polizia Postale and the Agenzia per la Cybersicurezza Nazionale, as well as the UK's Information Commissioner’s Office, which is reviewing Revolut's data handling practices to ensure compliance with data protection laws.
