Coinbase Shares Decline Ahead of Key Senate Vote on Crypto Legislation

Coinbase Global Inc. experienced a decline of approximately 6% on Tuesday, significantly outpacing the drop in Bitcoin prices. This downturn coincided with a sharp decrease in the likelihood of the U.S. CLARITY Act being passed this year, as prediction market traders reduced the odds to around 15%, down from over 30% the previous day.

The CLARITY Act is crucial for Coinbase as it aims to clarify federal oversight of digital assets and establish regulations for stablecoins, which are vital to the company's operations. The bill's fate hangs in the balance as the Senate prepares for a vote that requires 60 senators to proceed. With Republicans holding 53 seats, gaining support from at least seven Democrats is essential due to concerns surrounding stablecoin provisions.

The legislative process faced complications when Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming) rejected a Democratic counterproposal shortly before the vote. This rejection followed a day when Republicans had released a revised draft of the bill, incorporating numerous changes requested by Democrats. The urgency of the vote is heightened by the upcoming midterm elections, with the Senate scheduled to recess after October 2, limiting further opportunities to advance the legislation before then.
