Unstoppable Domains Withdraws ICANN Application and Offers Refunds for Web3 Domains

Unstoppable Domains has announced that it will not pursue an application for its Web3 top-level domains in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) 2026 expansion round. Matthew Gould, the company's founder, explained that the costs associated with compliance, application, and bidding for integrating Web3 domains into the ICANN system were higher than anticipated recoverable sales. As a result, the company will refund customers who purchased related domains, marking a significant shift from its previous commitment made in 2019 to make domains like .crypto and .wallet resolvable in standard web browsers.

The application window for this ICANN round opened on April 30 and closed on August 12, during which over 1,600 applications were submitted. While customers have been informed of the decision via email, details regarding the specific extensions affected and the terms of the refunds have not been disclosed. Some domain holders expressed concerns about the refunds, as they had acquired the domains based on Unstoppable's earlier assurances regarding the ICANN application process.

Despite this setback, Gould emphasized that Web3 domains will continue to function as on-chain assets for cryptocurrency transactions. Unstoppable Domains remains active in ICANN activities as a service provider and has previously partnered with Telegram to apply for the .gram domain. In contrast, the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has opted for a different strategy, with its token holders approving a restructuring of the ENS Foundation to pursue the .ens top-level domain in ICANN, while deciding not to apply for .eth, which is reserved for country codes.
