White House Teleprompter Operator Settles Probe Over Prediction Market Wagers

Gabriel Perez, a teleprompter operator at the White House, has reached a settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regarding a federal investigation into his betting activities using advance knowledge of President Donald Trump's speeches. As part of the settlement, Perez will pay a civil penalty of $65,000 and forfeit over $107,000 in winnings. Additionally, he will be barred from accessing the prediction market Kalshi for three years.

The CFTC found that Perez misappropriated information from presidential speeches before they were publicly delivered to place wagers. Kalshi flagged his betting activity earlier this year, leading to an internal investigation that resulted in the freezing of his account and the retention of more than $90,000 in profits. The White House stated it was unaware of Perez's betting and had previously warned staff against using insider information for personal gain.

This case is part of a broader scrutiny by U.S. authorities into trading on prediction markets. Earlier this year, federal prosecutors charged a U.S. soldier for allegedly using classified information to earn over $400,000 in bets related to the political situation in Venezuela. Additionally, investigations are ongoing into other individuals suspected of making significant profits from insider information related to military actions and corporate earnings.
