Binance Founder Acknowledges Underestimation of Real-World Asset Growth
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has admitted to underestimating the rapid growth of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) and stablecoins. In a recent interview, Zhao revealed that the market for tokenized RWAs has surged to between $29 billion and $33 billion by mid-2026, with tokenized US Treasuries alone accounting for over $13 billion. He expressed surprise at this expansion, noting that he did not foresee such significant growth when assessing the market landscape in early 2025.
The stablecoin market has also exceeded expectations, surpassing $320 billion, a figure Zhao specifically highlighted as unexpected. During events in Hong Kong in August 2026, he not only acknowledged this trend but also advocated for the tokenization of securities, suggesting it could be a pivotal direction for Web3. Zhao encouraged the concept of 'tokenizing everything' to improve global access to financial products.
As of August 19, 2026, the BNB Chain reported approximately 776,000 RWA holders, marking a 370% increase in just 30 days. Despite his enthusiasm for the potential of RWAs, Zhao also pointed out ongoing challenges in the sector, including issues related to liquidity, regulatory fragmentation, and product complexity. Since stepping down as Binance CEO in late 2023, Zhao has shifted his focus to being an industry figure and investor rather than an active exchange operator.
