Coinbase Launches Crypto Derivatives Trading for Canadian Investors

Coinbase has officially launched regulated crypto derivatives trading for Canadian investors through its subsidiary, Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM). As of September 2, the platform offers 23 futures contracts, including both perpetual and dated options, with leverage of up to 10x. This marks a significant milestone as Coinbase becomes the first major crypto exchange to provide native crypto futures in Canada.

The product suite includes futures contracts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets, with introductory fees starting at 0.02% per trade plus $0.11 per contract. Currently, access to these derivatives is limited to sophisticated or institutional clients, such as hedge funds and high-net-worth individuals, as defined under Canadian securities law. Retail investors will not have access to the futures trading feature at this time.

Coinbase's move into the Canadian derivatives market follows its registration as a restricted dealer in April 2024, which allowed for spot trading. The company aims to secure CIRO dealer status by early 2027, which could broaden access to retail clients. CEO Eric Richmond emphasized the importance of clearer regulations to support the expansion of financial products in Canada, as many local investors have previously relied on offshore platforms for derivatives trading.
