Broadcom Plans Over $60 Billion Debt Financing for AI Chip Purchases

Broadcom is seeking to raise more than $60 billion in senior debt through a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) aimed at financing the purchase of AI chips. This initiative is designed to lease chips to companies such as Anthropic, which is a significant beneficiary of the arrangement. The overall financing structure, including approximately $30 billion in junior debt, could approach a total of nearly $100 billion.

The SPV will acquire AI chips, including custom Tensor Processing Units developed in collaboration with Google, and lease them to AI firms. The senior-secured tranche is estimated to be between $60 billion and $70 billion, backed by Broadcom. This financing package is poised to be one of the largest corporate debt offerings in history, with discussions involving major investment firms like Blackstone and Apollo Global Management.

This financing model addresses a critical challenge for AI startups, allowing them to access necessary computing power without incurring substantial upfront costs for hardware. By leasing chips, companies like Anthropic can expand their training infrastructure while minimizing the impact on their balance sheets. Some forecasts suggest that this financing vehicle could ultimately support up to $370 billion in senior debt by mid-2029, driven by increasing demand for computing capacity.
