Broadcom's Stock Plunge Affects Nasdaq as Dow and S&P 500 Reach New Highs

Broadcom's recent earnings report, despite showcasing record revenue and a significant surge in AI chip sales, led to a dramatic decline in its stock price, impacting the Nasdaq index. On June 4, shares of Broadcom fell between 12.6% and 15%, resulting in a loss of approximately $286 billion in market value. This selloff was significant enough to pull the Nasdaq Composite into negative territory, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a new all-time high, climbing 1.73%. The S&P 500 also saw a modest increase of 0.41%.

In its fiscal Q2 2026 results released on June 3, Broadcom reported total revenue of $22.2 billion, marking a 48% year-over-year increase. AI-related chip revenue alone accounted for $10.8 billion, reflecting a remarkable 143% growth compared to the previous year. Although the company exceeded Wall Street's expectations for both sales and adjusted earnings per share, investor disappointment stemmed from its forward-looking guidance on AI demand, which did not meet the high expectations set by the market.

The contrasting performance of the Nasdaq and Dow highlights a broader trend in the market. While Broadcom's stock decline affected the tech-heavy Nasdaq, traditional companies within the Dow propelled it to record highs. The S&P 500's slight gain indicates that its performance is heavily influenced by a few key technology stocks. When these stocks falter, the index struggles to gain traction, whereas the Dow's diverse composition allows for more stability and growth.

The swift market reaction to Broadcom's earnings serves as a cautionary tale for investors in the semiconductor and AI sectors. Despite strong fundamentals, including a substantial revenue increase and impressive growth in AI chip sales, the stock's performance illustrates the risks associated with high market expectations. In the current investment climate, forward guidance is increasingly critical, as investors prioritize future potential over past performance.
