Federal Reserve Expected to Raise Interest Rates Amid Rising Inflation and Oil Prices

Futures markets indicate an 87% probability that the Federal Reserve will increase its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points during the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 16, 2026. This potential hike would raise the target federal funds range from 3.50%-3.75% to 3.75%-4.00%, marking the first increase since July 2023.

The shift in market expectations follows recent inflation data that exceeded forecasts and a surge in Brent crude oil prices, which have now surpassed $100 per barrel. A poll of economists conducted after the latest inflation report revealed that 85% anticipate the rate hike, with many expecting at least one more increase before March 2027, suggesting a broader tightening cycle may be underway.

The upcoming FOMC meeting is significant not only for the potential rate increase but also for the release of the updated economic projections, known as the 'dot plot.' This summary will provide insights into the Fed officials' expectations for future interest rates. The announcement is set for 2:00 p.m. ET on September 16, followed by a press conference with Fed Chair Jerome Powell, where the implications of the rate decision will be discussed.
