Hong Kong Cryptocurrency Exchange CoinEx Announces Shutdown After Nine Years

CoinEx, a cryptocurrency exchange based in Hong Kong, has announced it will cease operations after nine years of service. The company cited an increasingly difficult operating environment as the primary reason for its closure, highlighting the growing security and compliance risks associated with running a crypto exchange.

Users of CoinEx have until December 22, 2026, to withdraw their funds before the platform officially shuts down. As of September 14, 2026, the exchange reported a 24-hour trading volume of $70 million, significantly lower than other Asian exchanges such as CoinW and Gate.

The closure of CoinEx reflects a broader trend in the cryptocurrency industry, which has been experiencing a prolonged downturn known as the 'crypto winter.' Other exchanges, including Bitmart and BitMEX, have also announced their shutdowns this year, facing similar challenges. Analysts attribute the struggles of these exchanges to a decline in trading volumes among retail investors as digital asset prices continue to fall.
