Maya Protocol Suffers $1.7 Million Loss Due to Security Breach

Maya Protocol, a cross-chain liquidity platform, experienced a significant security breach on August 18, resulting in the theft of approximately $1.65 million. The attacker exploited six interconnected vulnerabilities within the protocol, leading to the creation of false account balances and the theft of around 20.83 BTC, valued at about $1.34 million, along with other assets.

In the aftermath of the attack, trading on the MAYAChain network was suspended, and the value of the protocol's token, CACAO, plummeted nearly 89%, dropping from $0.115 to a low of $0.013 before recovering to approximately $0.03. The incident was triggered when the protocol mistakenly identified a transaction as lost and activated a compensation mechanism that miscalculated, resulting in an erroneous addition of 49 million CACAO to a small liquidity pool.

The attack allowed the perpetrator to acquire over 99% of the liquidity pool's share by depositing a minimal amount, subsequently withdrawing 48.87 million CACAO, which was then exchanged for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other assets. The total value of the Maya Protocol liquidity pool decreased by about $10.9 million, with $6.4 million attributed to the depreciation of CACAO and $2.9 million from arbitrage trading.

The Maya Protocol team has expressed hope that the attacker may return the stolen funds as a bug bounty. If not, they plan to recover losses through investments in platforms like Aztec Chain. The protocol has not yet provided a timeline for the resumption of trading, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding security vulnerabilities in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.
