Nasdaq to Launch Overnight Trading Session in December 2026

Nasdaq has received approval from the SEC to introduce a new overnight trading session, set to begin on December 6, 2026. This session will run from 9 PM to 4 AM ET, extending Nasdaq's trading day to a total of 23 hours. The initiative is part of Nasdaq's broader 'Global Trading Hours' strategy, which aims to consolidate existing trading periods into a more streamlined schedule.

The new trading structure will feature two interlocking sessions: a Day Session from 4 AM to 8 PM ET, and the Night Session from 9 PM to 4 AM. This change will increase the total weekly trading hours to approximately 115, significantly higher than the traditional model that offers only 32.5 hours per week. The one-hour gap between 8 PM and 9 PM will serve as a maintenance window for the exchange.

The introduction of the Night Session is designed to attract international investors by aligning US market hours with those in Asia and Oceania, where it corresponds to morning and afternoon trading times. This move is also a response to competitive pressures from platforms that offer 24/7 trading for digital assets. However, traders should be aware that the Night Session will feature fewer order types and reduced regulatory protections, which may affect trading dynamics.
