Social Security COLA Could Raise Average Checks to $2,008 in 2027
The Social Security COLA 2027 forecast sits at 3.5 percent right now, and that number comes from the latest projection from the Senior Citizens League, or TSCL. If this 2027 COLA increase holds, the average Social Security check would climb by $67.90, going from $1,940.08 up to $2,007.98. This cost of living adjustment sits a touch lower than the 3.6 percent TSCL projected just a month earlier, but it still marks the biggest Social Security increase in about four years. The Social Security Administration has not confirmed anything yet at the time of writing, though officials expect an announcement on October 14.
Social Security COLA 2027 Forecast: Cost Of Living And Bigger Checks

So what does this Social Security COLA 2027 forecast actually mean for the people who count on these checks every month? Here is a look at the numbers, and also at what officials have to say about it.
How The 2027 COLA Increase Adds Up
A 3.5 percent bump would push the typical retiree’s check from $1,940.08 up to $2,007.98, a gain of $67.90 a month, and that also matches this Social Security COLA 2027 forecast. Someone getting $2,000 a month right now would see that same 2027 COLA increase raise the payment to somewhere around $2,070. If the number holds, this would mark the biggest cost of living adjustment since 2023, up from the 2.8 percent seniors got in 2026 and the 2.5 percent from 2025.
AARP, another group that looks out for older Americans, also projects a 3.5 percent adjustment for 2027, which matches TSCL’s latest figure and sits slightly below AARP’s earlier estimate of 3.6 percent. Both groups now expect the final Social Security COLA 2027 forecast to land somewhere between 3.5 and 3.6 percent once September’s inflation data comes in, and that Social Security increase 2027 would still stand as the largest annual increase since 2023.
How The Official COLA Gets Calculated
The Social Security Administration will announce the official number behind this Social Security COLA 2027 forecast on October 14, the same day the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts out September’s Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, which goes by the short name CPI-W. That formula averages the July, August and September readings to set the cost of living adjustment 2027, and right now the August number, which came out September 11, sits at 3.5 percent, following July’s 3.4 percent reading.
What Officials Are Saying About The Increase
TSCL Executive Director Shannon Benton had this to say:
“The biggest thing we’re watching with the COLA announcement coming are short-term shocks to the economy that push inflation way up or down in the next 30 days.”
Benton also stated:
“No matter if the COLA announcement comes in slightly higher or slightly lower than our prediction, seniors will probably end up disappointed in the long run. The reality is that older Americans allocate their budgets differently than people still in the workforce, so inflation hits them differently. The CPI-W captures the experience of urban wage earners, which doesn’t represent the average senior’s budget.”
TSCL’s 2026 Senior Survey found that 89 percent of older Americans said last year’s COLA fell short, and 44 percent said Social Security covers all of their income right now.
Benton added:
“The COLA only happening once a year puts life on hold for a lot of seniors. When prices rise, they don’t rise next January when your benefit check goes up.”
Retirees now wait to see whether this 2027 COLA increase actually matches the official Social Security increase that will kick in on January 1, 2027. At the time of writing, this Social Security COLA 2027 forecast still stands as TSCL’s final prediction before the Social Security Administration makes the number official next month, so an update could still land before then.
