Poland's Orlen Loses $400 Million in Failed Oil Trade with Venezuela

Poland's state-controlled oil refiner Orlen has incurred losses of approximately $400 million due to a failed oil trade with Venezuela. The company made substantial prepayments to two Dubai-based intermediaries for Venezuelan crude oil that ultimately did not materialize. Investigations revealed that around $230 million was sent to Hannon International Middle East DMCC and another $100 million to Horizon Global, both of which were supposed to facilitate oil deliveries during a brief period of eased U.S. sanctions on Venezuela's oil sector in late 2023 and early 2024.

The funds transferred to these intermediaries appear to have been converted into cryptocurrencies, effectively disappearing from the financial system. Polish prosecutors have indicated that the total financial impact, including demurrage costs from idle tankers, amounts to about 1.6 billion zloty, or $400 million. In connection with this case, three former executives of Orlen were indicted in August 2026 on charges of negligent supervision, facing potential prison sentences of up to 25 years.

The situation highlights the complexities and risks associated with international oil trades, particularly in the context of sanctions and cryptocurrency. Venezuela has increasingly turned to digital currencies, such as Tether's USDT, to conduct oil transactions outside traditional banking channels, especially as it navigates U.S. sanctions. In 2025, Venezuela recorded approximately $44.6 billion in cryptocurrency transaction flows, largely driven by its energy sector's adoption of digital assets as a means to bypass restrictions.
