SpaceX is Spending $100 Billion on a Second Starbase in…

SpaceX announced on 25 August 2026 that it will build a $100 billion Starship launch facility in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, making it what Louisiana Economic Development calls the company's fourth and largest launch site.Construction begins in 2027 with the first launch targeted as early as 2029, and the commitment arrives just two weeks before 319 million additional SPCX shares unlock on 9 September.

Five Complexes, 11,100 Jobs, and a Self-Sustaining Spaceport

The facility, branded Starbase Louisiana, will sit on a former Exxon property at Pecan Island on the Gulf Coast. At full buildout, it will house five launch complexes, each with two launch pads and a propellant farm, alongside propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping access, vehicle processing, an airport, and employee housing. Elon Musk indicated the site will support a high launch cadence as Starship operations expand.Louisiana Economic Development estimates the facility will create 3,000 direct jobs over 10 years at an average annual salary of $92,600, which is 192% above the Vermilion Parish average. An additional 8,100 indirect jobs bring the total projected employment impact across Acadiana to more than 11,100 positions. At peak buildout, construction alone will employ roughly 30,000 workers.SpaceX has committed $25 million to the Community Foundation of Acadiana as a charitable donation. The company will also make payments instead of taxes worth $25 million annually for 25 years with an escalator clause, plus an upfront payment of $20 million.Total local payments over the life of the agreement are projected at $820 million. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said the announcement "pushes our state beyond $250 billion in new investment." The state is supporting the project through the Aerospace Facilities and Activities Rebate under Act 190 of 2026, along with participation in the High Impact Jobs programme and LED FastStart customised workforce recruitment.

Orbital Data Centres Moved to Late 2027

The Louisiana announcement coincided with an acceleration of SpaceX's orbital data centre timeline. Musk posted that SpaceX, in partnership with Nvidia, has designed a space-optimised Vera Rubin NVL72 system for launch to orbit in Q4 2027, moved up from a previous target of 2028, with significant scale in 2028. The shift underscores how rapidly SpaceX is linking its launch infrastructure to the AI compute buildout.JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth projected that from 2029 onward, SpaceX will pursue orbital compute capacity reaching approximately 75 GW by the end of 2031 "at a significantly cheaper cost than could be done on Earth." The Louisiana site, with its deep-water shipping access and planned launch cadence of thousands of Starship flights per year, is designed to feed that demand by carrying both Starlink satellites and orbital data centre hardware to orbit. SpaceX has already spent more than $8 billion developing Starship to reach this point.

      The September Share Unlock Collision

For SPCX investors, the $100 billion capital commitment lands in a compressed window of supply pressure. The first share unlock on 6 August released roughly 912 million shares and pushed the public float from 4.9% to about 12% of shares outstanding.A second tranche of 319 million shares unlocked on 20 August, with SPCX trading near its $135 IPO price and well below a post-IPO high near $225.Further unlocks are scheduled on 9 September, 24 September, 9 October, and 24 October, with 319.0 million shares scheduled for release on 9 September and 328.4 million shares for the later tranches. A separate 59.1 million-share affiliate release is also scheduled for 10 September. The full 180-day lockup expires on 8 December, and Musk's own stake, the largest single block, does not unlock until June 2027 Analyst consensus remains at a $228 average price target, suggesting most coverage views the current selloff as supply-driven rather than a reassessment of the company's fundamentals. The question is whether a $100 billion buildout narrative and the orbital compute timeline acceleration can absorb the share overhang. A facility that will not fly until 2029 is a bet that the launch market, and the orbital data centre market behind it, will demand capacity that does not yet exist. SPCX rose about 2.5% on the Louisiana announcement, a modest reaction relative to the scale of the commitment.
