Tourists Were Rescued on Mount Shasta After Planning Their Hike Using AI

      • Three inexperienced tourists used Google Gemini to choose a route and prepare for a climb of Mount Shasta.
      • According to rescuers, the AI recommended bringing significantly less food and water than the group ultimately needed.
      • The tourists went off route, spent the night in the mountains, and were evacuated by rescuers.

Three tourists from California had to be rescued while climbing Mount Shasta after planning the trip with the help of AI. The Chicago Tribune reports.

After the rescue, the men told a representative of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office that they had used Google Gemini to get information about the route and the supplies they would need. The agency called their overreliance on AI a “critical mistake.”

According to rescuers, Gemini advised the group to bring significantly less food and water than they needed when the planned eight-hour climb turned into a multi-day trip.

The tourists set up camp at an elevation of about 8,400 feet and set out for the summit at around 03:00. They reached it only at about 19:00 — seven hours later than the recommended turnaround time. As a result, the descent took place after dark.

The group lost the route and ended up in Mud Creek Canyon, where one of the participants fell and injured his knee. The tourists had to spend the night in the mountains.

The next morning, they were found by U.S. Forest Service personnel, after which volunteers from the Siskiyou County Search and Rescue team joined the operation. All members of the group and the rescuers safely returned to the trailhead.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that travelers should verify information with local rangers and use multiple navigation methods. The agency also urged people not to rely solely on AI when planning hikes.

Earlier, we reported that MrBeast and Beast Industries entered into a multi-year partnership with Google. Under the deal, Gemini will be integrated directly into the blogger’s videos and creative process, including during extreme challenges in the jungle, the desert, and the Arctic.
