Samsung and SK Hynix Reject Prepayment Electricity Fee Proposal from Korea Electric Power Corporation

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have declined a prepayment proposal for electricity bills from the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), which aimed to secure funding for the construction of a power grid intended for a new technology cluster. The proposal, which local media estimates at 250 trillion won, represents five years' worth of electricity bills for the two companies.

The rejection comes amid growing concerns among the semiconductor manufacturers regarding the sustainability of the current semiconductor boom over the next five years. Utility companies across Asia, including KEPCO, are facing challenges in meeting the increasing energy demands driven by the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors, largely due to tight funding conditions.

A spokesperson for KEPCO confirmed the rejection, stating that both companies ultimately decided against the proposal. This decision highlights the ongoing tension between utility providers and major tech firms as they navigate the complexities of energy supply and demand in a rapidly evolving market.
