Singapore Exchange Secures CFTC Approval for Crypto Perpetual Futures for US Institutions

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) has received approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to offer Bitcoin and Ether perpetual futures to institutional investors in the United States. This marks SGX as the first major exchange in Asia to open its crypto perpetual futures market to US institutional money, allowing American hedge funds, asset managers, and proprietary trading firms to access Asian crypto liquidity pools without the need for new exchange memberships or offshore entities.

SGX's Bitcoin perpetual futures (BTP) and Ether perpetual futures (ETP) contracts, which do not expire and utilize periodic funding rates to align prices with the spot market, have already seen significant trading activity. Since their launch on November 24, 2025, these contracts have accumulated a trading volume of $5.8 billion, with peak daily volumes reaching approximately $145 million. As of the end of August 2026, open interest stood at about $19 million, with Bitcoin representing a substantial portion of both open interest and average daily trading volume.

The CFTC's Regulation 48.10 facilitates this development by allowing foreign exchanges to offer their products to US persons, provided they meet specific regulatory standards. This regulatory framework has historically enabled US traders to access international commodities markets. By listing these products on a regulated foreign exchange, SGX provides US institutions with a compliant avenue to trade popular crypto derivatives, a market segment that has largely operated outside US regulatory oversight.

SGX's move introduces a new competitive landscape for the CME Group, which has traditionally dominated the US market with its dated Bitcoin and Ether futures. With SGX's offerings, US trading desks now have an alternative that combines the benefits of a regulated environment with the flexibility of perpetual contracts. SGX is also planning to expand its crypto product lineup to include dated futures and options, indicating a growing interest in exchange-traded crypto products among international institutions.
