Trump Proposes New Iran Sanctions Amid Rising Oil Market Tensions

President Donald Trump has urged Congress to incorporate tariffs targeting Iran into the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act, a move that combines two significant foreign policy issues into one legislative package. The Russia sanctions bill, which previously passed the Senate with an 86-12 vote, is seen as a strategic vehicle for advancing Iran-related measures that might otherwise face delays.

This proposal comes as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalate, following Iranian attacks on commercial vessels. In response, the United States has reinstated naval blockades and revoked waivers on Iranian oil exports. Oil prices, which had surged earlier in 2026, are currently trading between $80 and $85 per barrel for both WTI and Brent, following a brief spike of over 5% after the sanctions waivers were lifted.

The U.S. and Iran had previously signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran's violation of this agreement led to the reinstatement of sanctions. This situation has put the U.S. military back on alert in a region critical for global oil supply, with approximately 20% of the world's oil passing through this waterway daily.

If the proposed tariffs on Iranian oil are included in the final sanctions bill, analysts anticipate further tightening of global oil supply, which could lead to additional price increases. The geopolitical landscape remains volatile, and Tehran's recent actions indicate a willingness to escalate tensions, suggesting that markets may not be fully prepared for potential disruptions.
