U.S. Stocks Rebound as Major Indexes Close Higher on August 24, 2026

U.S. stocks experienced a rebound on Friday, August 24, 2026, following a significant sell-off in the previous session. All three major indexes ended the day in positive territory, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by 1%, or 517.80 points, to close at 53,277.01 points. The increase was bolstered by a 2.4% gain in shares of Merck & Co., Inc. (MRK).

The S&P 500 saw a modest increase of 0.4%, or 33.21 points, finishing at 7,674.37 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq also advanced by 0.4%, or 113.29 points, to close at 26,180.46 points. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) and the Materials Select Sector SPDR (XLB) were among the top performers, gaining 1.3% and 2.2%, respectively. Overall, eight of the eleven sectors in the S&P 500 ended the day positively.

Despite the gains, investor sentiment remained cautious due to rising bond yields, which have been a concern amid fears of increasing inflation driven by higher oil prices. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond rose to 4.734%, while the 30-year Treasury note yield climbed to 5.273%.

Looking ahead, investors are anticipating a speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at the upcoming Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, seeking insights into the central bank's future monetary policy. The week concluded with the S&P 500 down 1.4% and the Nasdaq down 2%, marking the end of their three-week winning streaks.
