US Central Command Intensifies Naval Blockade Against Iran, Redirects 62 Vessels

As of August 14, US Central Command (CENTCOM) has redirected 62 commercial vessels and disabled three ships as part of its intensified naval blockade against Iranian ports, which was reinstated on July 14, 2026. This enforcement phase has entered its fifth week, following a previous blockade period that lasted from April 13 to June 18, 2026, during which 67 vessels were redirected.

CENTCOM has deployed a range of military assets, including aircraft carriers and helicopters, to intercept ships attempting to navigate through the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. When vessels fail to comply with warnings to divert, US forces are authorized to disable them, a measure that has been applied to three ships so far. Additionally, US personnel have boarded two vessels, indicating a serious level of non-compliance.

Humanitarian aid vessels are exempt from the blockade's restrictions, allowing for the passage of ships carrying essential supplies such as food and medicine. This exemption has been consistently maintained throughout both enforcement phases of the blockade, which aims to limit Iran's maritime trade as part of a broader pressure campaign initiated by the US government. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supply, remains a focal point of these operations, with about 20% of the world's oil passing through it under normal conditions.
