Analyst: Binance spot trading volume is only 10% of perpetual contracts

PANews reported on August 27 that Joao Wedson, CEO of crypto analysis platform Alphractal, stated that Binance’s market structure continues to show a strong preference for derivatives trading over spot trading. Currently, Binance’s spot trading volume accounts for only about 10% of perpetual contract trading volume. This does not necessarily mean the market is in a bear market. It highlights a shift in how market participants engage, with traders increasingly inclined to use derivatives for hedging, leverage operations, and short-term position management.

Notably, this ratio remained at a relatively low level for most of 2026. Even during periods of strong Bitcoin price momentum, spot trading activity grew far more slowly than perpetual contract trading activity. Historically, higher spot trading participation may indicate stronger demand for actual asset purchases, while a market environment with larger derivatives trading volume often reflects that the market is more influenced by position management and leverage operations. At present, the key is not bearish sentiment but market structure. If spot trading participation begins to expand relative to derivatives, this could become an important signal of a broader shift in market demand.
