Arbitrum Introduces ZK Proofs to Enhance Settlement Times

The Arbitrum development team has announced the integration of zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs into its platform, aiming to implement a multi-proof settlement model. This advancement is expected to significantly reduce the settlement time for Arbitrum blocks to Ethereum Layer 1 from several days to just a few hours. The introduction of ZK proofs is designed to improve user experience, enhance cross-chain bridge efficiency, and optimize capital use while maintaining security through a multi-proof mechanism.

Current developments include the capability to execute the same state transition functions in the SP1 zkVM as in optimistic execution, which allows for the generation of ZK proofs for actual mainnet block production. Additionally, the Stylus framework now supports proving WASM contracts alongside Solidity contracts. An independent Rust verifier has also been launched, establishing ZK proofs as a primary verification method alongside traditional approaches.

The BoLD settlement protocol has been updated to accept ZK proofs, backed by a fast confirmation committee, while the original dispute games remain as a fallback option. This creates a multi-proof architecture that effectively coordinates ZK proofs, proof committees, and fraud proofs. The development team is focused on reducing proof costs and plans to integrate related code into the Nitro main production path in the near future. Upcoming steps include optimizing proofs further, transitioning to Reth-based execution, completing Layer 1 message inbox proofs, and incorporating ZK settlement capabilities into node configurations for flexible activation across chains.
