Barclays Forecasts Two Fed Rate Hikes Following Warsh's Remarks

Barclays has revised its expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates, predicting two 25 basis point hikes before the end of the year. This change follows comments made by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh during the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, where he emphasized the ongoing challenges posed by inflation.

Warsh, who took over as Fed chair in late May, highlighted that inflation remains significantly above the Fed's target, with the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation rate at approximately 3.7%. He indicated that if there is uncertainty about inflation moving towards the 2% target, further action is necessary to tighten financial conditions.

The brokerage's updated forecast marks a significant shift from its previous stance, which anticipated no rate changes in 2026. The CME FedWatch tool reflected a 60.4% probability of a rate hike in September following Warsh's speech, indicating a rapid adjustment in market expectations. Barclays noted that as the year progresses, the favorable year-over-year comparisons that previously helped improve inflation metrics will diminish, potentially leading to stubborn annual figures as the fourth quarter approaches.
